Wheat grain is one of the oldest and most important cereal crops in the world. In Sri Lanka it is imported and processed domestically into flour which is used for the purpose of making food items such as bread, biscuits, crackers, pastries, buns, cakes, pizzas and pastas. Wheat flour is not directly imported due to the tax imposed. However, in the year 2000, due to a domestic shortage, the Sri Lanka government purchased 68,000 MT of Wheat flour processed by the National Flour Mill, Dubai, in a sale facilitated by Mondial Impex.
