Rice is the staple food in Sri Lanka and is the main crop cultivated in the country. Nearly two million farmer families engage in Rice cultivation, accounting for 34% of total cultivated agriculture land, and producing approximately 2.7 million tons of non-Basmati raw Rice each year. This satisfies about 100% of domestic consumption, except in the cases of shortages due to poor harvest years when Mondial Impex facilitates the importing of Rice from countries such as India, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.
